โ—† High ropes course requirements

What your site needs to support a commercially viable ropes course

A high ropes course is a high-performing investment โ€” but only when it is matched to the right site. This page maps the land area, access infrastructure, compliance obligations, and investor profiles that determine whether your project will deliver at scale.

Site & infrastructure

What your site needs before design begins

A high ropes course imposes predictable demands on land, access, and on-site infrastructure. Addressing these thresholds early prevents costly revisions once planning and permitting are underway.

๐ŸŒฒ

Designated land area

A viable site typically requires between 1 and 2.5 hectares of usable ground, depending on the course scale and throughput target. Freestanding pole structures can operate within significantly smaller footprints where land is constrained.

๐Ÿš—

Access & vehicle capacity

Adequate parking โ€” typically 30 to 80 spaces, scaling with daily visitor targets โ€” is essential to handle peak throughput without creating access bottlenecks that constrain your operational capacity.

โšก

Utilities & visitor facilities

Electricity, running water, and briefing or changing facilities are standard requirements. Toilet facilities are non-negotiable for operators seeking commercial approval and public liability insurance.

Site visit included Skywalker conducts a site visit before finalising any design. Terrain conditions, tree cover, drainage, and subsoil stability all influence pole placement, foundation depth, and platform heights โ€” factors that are assessed in person, not from a desk.
Three investment scales

Match the scope of your project to your site and market

Skywalker structures its high ropes course delivery across three investment scales, each calibrated to a different site context, visitor draw, and operational complexity. Your site conditions and throughput ambitions determine which scale is the right starting point.

Community scale
Community hub

Designed for schools, municipalities, and local parks. A compact footprint, straightforward infrastructure, and lean staffing make this the lowest-barrier entry point into the market.

Typical product mix Low ropes course ยท Adventure playground ยท Small linear zipline
Regional scale
Regional magnet

The benchmark configuration for leisure parks, rural tourism operators, and resort developers. Balances high visual impact and throughput with lean staffing and a strong commercial return.

Typical product mix Octagon or grid pole structure ยท Dual ziplines ยท Net Adventure zone
Destination scale
International destination

Engineered for major tourism zones, ski resorts, and flagship leisure destinations. High-capacity ropes configurations combined with signature thrill elements and substantial ancillary infrastructure.

Typical product mix Double hexagon ropes course ยท Full-scale Net Adventure ยท ZipCoaster

Standards & compliance

The certification framework every operator must meet

All Skywalker-built high ropes courses are designed and constructed in full compliance with EN 15567 (European Ropes Course Standard), Parts 1 and 2. These standards are the accepted reference point for insurers, planning authorities, and legal assessments across Europe โ€” compliance is not optional.

Applicable standards

EN 15567-1 โ€” Governs the design, construction, and installation of all ropes course elements, from poles and platforms to cables and elements.

EN 15567-2 โ€” Sets operational requirements, covering staff training procedures, participant management, and daily operational protocols.

NEN EN 12572 โ€” Structural anchor and hold requirements applicable to ropes course infrastructure.

ISO 17020 โ€” The standard governing the independent inspection bodies engaged for both inaugural and periodic inspections.

ERCA & IAPA โ€” All constructions observe the guidelines of the European Ropes Course Association and the International Adventure Park Association.

TรœV site acceptance testing

Skywalker holds an exclusive partnership with TรœV โ€” one of Europe's leading independent testing and certification bodies โ€” for inaugural inspections prior to opening. The inaugural inspection is carried out in accordance with ISO/IEC 17020, and the resulting Inaugural Certification (EN 15567) is the document insurers and planning authorities require.

Annual inspection requirement

EN 15567 Part 1 stipulates that a periodic inspection must be carried out at a maximum interval of 15 months from the initial inspection date. While not statutory law, the standard is the accepted benchmark in legal assessments and insurance underwriting.
