◆ High-Wire Forest Parks — Safety systems

Protect every visitor — choose the right belay system

Traditional two-carabiner self-belay places the burden of safe attachment entirely on the participant. At every transition point there is a window of risk — particularly for younger visitors. Modern continuous and smart belay systems eliminate that exposure entirely, keeping participants connected to the safety line throughout the course.

Skywalker supplies and installs four certified systems: Saferoller and Speedrunner (continuous belay), and Edelrid Smart Belay and LockD Clips (smart belay). All four are available direct from our shop.

Safety decision

Why your belay choice defines your park's performance

The belay system you specify affects far more than liability. It shapes instruction time, staff requirements, visitor throughput, and the experience guests take home. Operators who upgrade from self-belay to a continuous or smart system consistently report shorter briefing cycles, reduced supervision ratios, and measurably higher satisfaction scores.

Continuous belay systems keep participants permanently connected at every point on the course — including at transitions between elements. Smart belay systems use interconnected carabiners to ensure at least one connection is always engaged, preserving an authentic climbing feel without compromise on protection.

Higher safety level — no accidental disconnection at any transition point
Shorter briefings — minimal instruction needed; accessible to all ages and experience levels
Reduced staffing ratios — fewer supervisors required per group on course
Higher throughput — faster transitions mean more visitors on course at any given time
Retrofittable options — smart belay systems can be added to existing course infrastructure
Planning this project? Our training and education programme covers installation, staff certification, and EN 15567 (European Ropes Course Standard) inspection cycles — recommended alongside any belay system order. Ongoing component servicing is handled through our lifecycle management service.
Continuous belay systems

Permanent connection — zero risk of accidental disconnection

A continuous belay system keeps participants permanently attached to the safety lifeline throughout the entire course. A purpose-built trolley travels along the cable and passes through each transition point automatically — there is nothing for the participant to unclip at any stage. This eliminates the primary cause of climbing park incidents and reduces the instruction burden on your staff significantly.

Recommended — flagship continuous

Saferoller Continuous Belay

Designed by Swiss safety specialist Saferoller, this system uses a trolley engineered for multi-course layouts. The trolley transitions between individual activities without ever detaching from the main safety cable — 100% passive protection at all times. Recommended for new builds where cable routing can be planned around the system from the outset.

Seamless transition — no detachment at any course element
Purpose-built for diverging multi-circuit layouts
Minimises briefing time and supervision ratios

Continuous belay — value option

Speedrunner Continuous Belay

The Speedrunner delivers the best price-to-quality ratio among continuous belay systems. Built on a Kanhook-based design, it requires fewer connection points than comparable systems and is straightforward to install — making it the practical choice for operators upgrading an existing course or adding circuits where capital allocation is more constrained.

Kanhook design — fewer connection points, faster install
Best price point in its class — no compromise on protection
Ideal for retrofit and secondary circuits

Smart belay systems

Interconnected carabiners — authentic climbing with active protection

Smart belay systems use a pair of mechanically linked carabiners: it is physically impossible for a participant to unclip both at the same time. At least one connection to the safety line is always maintained, eliminating accidental disconnection while preserving the authentic feel of a traditional climbing course. Smart belay is also highly retrofittable — it integrates into existing course infrastructure without major structural changes.

Edelrid Smart Belay

The award-winning Smart Belay® by German manufacturer Edelrid is the benchmark for active safety in ropes courses and adventure parks. Its interconnected carabiner mechanism prevents simultaneous disconnection while giving participants genuine control of their own belay — creating a more engaging, confidence-building experience. Compatible with vertical elements, auto-belays, and zip lines.

Simultaneous disconnection mechanically impossible
Participant-managed — authentic climbing feel and user confidence
Retrofittable — no major infrastructure changes required

Smart belay — flexible clip system

LockD Clips Smart Belay

The LockD Clips system delivers smart belay protection with an ergonomic clip mechanism designed for ease of use across a broad range of ages and physical capabilities. The interconnected design ensures at least one clip remains attached at all transitions, while the intuitive action keeps instruction time short and participant frustration low.

Ergonomic clip action — easy for all ages including younger participants
Simultaneous disconnection mechanically prevented

Continuous or smart belay — which is right for your park?

Both system types are recommended by Skywalker and both exceed self-belay on every commercial and safety metric. The right choice depends on your park's design, audience profile, budget, and operational model.

Choose continuous belay if…

You are designing or building a new course and can plan cable layout from the outset
Your primary audience is families with younger children where minimal instruction is essential
Throughput is a commercial priority and you want to minimise briefing time per group
You want the maximum reduction in supervision ratios — fewer staff per participant group

Choose smart belay if…

You are upgrading an existing course and want to avoid large-scale infrastructure changes
Your audience includes older teens and adults who value autonomy and a genuine climbing feel
Your course includes vertical elements, auto-belays, or zip lines requiring multi-system compatibility
Lower initial installation cost is a priority alongside routine inspection compliance

Can I use both system types in one park?

Yes — many parks use continuous belay on high-volume family circuits and smart belay on more technically demanding adult courses. Skywalker has designed and installed mixed-system parks and can advise on the optimal split for your specific layout and visitor demographics.

Not sure which system fits your site?

Our team can assess your course layout, audience profile, and operational model and give you a specific recommendation. Contact us before placing an order if you have any uncertainty — we can also provide a comparison of installation cost and projected maintenance overhead across the four systems.
